Know Your Fabric. Care for It Better.

At Mustard, we choose fabrics that are comfortable, breathable and suited to everyday Indian weather. Many of our styles are made using viscose, rayon, cotton and other carefully selected fabrics.

Every product page includes the garment's exact fabric composition and recommended wash care. This guide explains what those care instructions mean and how to care for your Mustard clothing so it stays comfortable, beautiful and long-lasting.

The Fabrics We Use

Rayon & Viscose

Rayon and viscose are among the fabrics we use most often, including rayon crepe, rayon slub and viscose linen.

They are lightweight, breathable and fluid, with a soft drape that makes them comfortable for everyday wear.

These fabrics can soften with use and may crease easily. Natural creasing is part of the character of these fabrics and is not considered a defect.

Care Tip: Wash gently, avoid machine washing and wringing, and dry in the shade.

Cotton

Cotton is naturally breathable, comfortable and durable, making it a practical choice for everyday wear and warm weather.

Some cotton garments may experience slight shrinkage during the first wash. Washing in cold water and following the care instructions on the product page can help minimise this.

Care tip: Wash in cold water and avoid excessive heat.

Chiffon & Georgette

Chiffon and georgette are lightweight, delicate fabrics that create a soft, flowing look and beautiful movement.

Because of their delicate construction, they can be more susceptible to snags and pulls.

Care Tip: Keep away from sharp jewellery, rough surfaces, and Velcro. Handle gently while washing and wearing. Prefer soft wash or dry clean for better care. 

Denim

Denim is durable and designed for repeated wear, but dyed denim can release excess colour during the first few washes.

Care tip: Turn denim inside out, wash sparingly and keep it separate from light-coloured garments during the first few washes.

Wool & Pashmina

Wool and pashmina are warm, soft fabrics suited to colder weather.

They require gentle handling to help maintain their shape and texture.

Care tip: Never wring. Reshape the garment while damp and dry it flat unless the product's care label specifically recommends dry cleaning.

Shantoon & Tencel Twill

Shantoon and Tencel twill are smooth, structured fabrics used for styles that require a more defined shape, as well as selected lining applications.

They respond well to careful pressing.

Care tip: Iron on the reverse side using a low-temperature setting and always follow the individual product's care instructions.

Care by Wash Type

Hand Wash

Hand wash is the most common care instruction across many of our garments.

For the best results:

  • Use cold water.

  • Choose a mild detergent.

  • Handle the garment gently.

  • Do not rub, brush or scrub the fabric.

  • Never wring or twist the garment.

  • Rinse thoroughly until the water runs clear.

  • Remove excess water gently before drying.

If machine washing is permitted on the product page, place the garment in a laundry bag and use the most delicate cycle available.

Dry Clean

Dry cleaning is recommended for selected structured, embroidered and winter garments.

Some garments contain combinations of outer fabrics, linings and embellishments that may react differently to water. Professional dry cleaning helps maintain the garment's shape and finish.

If your garment has a stain, point it out to the dry cleaner rather than attempting to treat it yourself.

Easy Soft Wash

Easy Soft Wash is a gentler hand-washing method designed for delicate garments.

  • Use cold water.

  • Add a mild detergent.

  • Soak the garment briefly.

  • Gently press the water through the fabric rather than rubbing it.

  • Rinse thoroughly.

  • Avoid wringing or twisting.

Drying, Ironing & Storing

Proper drying and storage are just as important as washing.

Dry in the Shade

Whenever possible, dry your clothes in the shade. Direct sunlight can cause dyed and printed fabrics to fade faster.

Turn garments inside out before hanging them to dry.

Do Not Wring

Avoid twisting or wringing your garments, especially delicate fabrics.

Instead, gently press out excess water or roll the garment in a clean towel to absorb moisture.

Iron Carefully

Iron garments on the reverse side using a low to medium temperature, depending on the fabric and product care label.

For embroidery, sequins and prints, place a pressing cloth between the iron and the garment. Never iron directly over embellishments.

Wash Dark Colours Separately

Dark and strongly dyed garments may release some excess colour during their first few washes.

We recommend washing dark colours separately, particularly during the first two or three washes.

Store Correctly

Fold heavier garments rather than hanging them for long periods, as their weight can cause the shoulders to stretch.

For winter wool and pashmina garments, store them folded in a breathable cotton bag.

A Note About Colour

Some hand-dyed and hand-printed fabrics may release a small amount of colour during the first few washes.

This is a normal characteristic of certain dyed fabrics and is not necessarily a product defect.

For the first one or two washes, we recommend washing these garments separately in cold water.
